👀 The Secret Behind More Views and Clicks

Newsletters, YouTube, and more - this is true for all of them.

Hey everyone,

Content creation is generally about trying new things and seeing ‘what sticks’. Last week I did something similar with my newsletter; the results were interesting.

💭 The Big Idea

Any newsletter, YouTube video or other forms of content thrive based on clicks. But the key question is, ‘how do you get more clicks?

The Student Solopreneur had been averaging a 63-64% open rate for the last few weeks. I have been changing a few things every email to see what makes a difference, but I saw no increase. Then I tried a trick I had learnt for my LinkedIn writing:

  • Take a commonly held belief and provide your contrarian take on it to challenge your audience

I built this into my previous newsletter. Let’s break it down.

The newsletter title was straight to the point:

‘👋🏾 Say Bye to Procrastination’

I used the subtitle to create impact:

'Pomodoro Technique Users Do Not Read This.’

The commonly held belief is that the Pomodoro technique allows for great productivity and results. By specifically saying that Pomodoro users should not open my email, I created: curiosity, intrigue, and potentially some shock for all Pomodoro users.

The contrarian take I provided was that there are better ways to defeat procrastination than the Pomodoro technique.

This resulted in:

  • An increase in the open rate

  • Increased click rate (more on this in a later edition)

This technique can be applied to any form of content creation, in my opinion, e.g. using YouTube thumbnails and titles to create curiosity, intrigue and suspense for your contrarian take on a commonly held belief.

📝 Your Action Item:

  • Create a piece of content etc., around a commonly held belief that you have a contrarian take on

It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary - just your way of thinking about things that aren’t common.

Let me know how it goes for you! I will be super excited to hear back!
P.S. If you have more questions, just send me an email! Happy to help 🙂

🚙 My Solopreneur Journey:

Interesting newsletter again this week - much shorter than it usually is. What are all your thoughts on a shorter newsletter?

I have been playing with different newsletter features as much as possible to learn what is best too. There is a steep learning curve to email marketing and newsletters as a whole. Quite easy to get lost!

I also didn’t post on LinkedIn for the first time today in 75+ days for multiple reasons, but mainly that I want to focus on my clients as well as wrap up university. I will now post 3x per week over 7x per week, and I should still see LinkedIn audience growth, albeit slower. This will also help me focus on other projects I am doing and ensure I deliver better value to all of you. One of the biggest things on my to-do list is to revamp my branding and get my personal website finally launched - we are reaching launch soon 🤞🏾

Thank you to all of you for reading, as always 😉
More cool things and updates coming soon!

See you all next week!

Cheers,

Sanay

🧠 My Recommendations

I am still on the stoicism philosophy journey! Great book for any looking to begin - it’s also a lot ‘lighter’ in my opinion, compared to Meditations. I am looking for book recs (fiction, if possible)! Just hit reply and let me know what all of you are reading 👀

Alex talks about how to grow an audience from scratch - something I am doing at the moment. Highly recommend it to all of those looking to build a following on social media to jumpstart your one-person businesses. Lots of gold dust!
