🤔 Expectations and Promises

Setting yourself up for success.

Hey everyone,

Another interesting topic I have been exploring as I look to grow this newsletter somewhat: expectations vs promises.

I think it’s really important to define both of these in any given setting, particularly when in client-facing situations. If not well defined and agreed to, then there could be a misalignment of goals and ineffective communication. And, to a large extent, I believe this holds true for other aspects of life too, e.g. family, friends, university etc. Sure, in some cases, it isn’t verbalised, but it’s still there subconsciously.

Looking at it from a business point of view, whether you are a solopreneur or enter into a venture with partners, I think it’s important to set the right expectations for yourself and others. You have to make them realistic and also be flexible and adaptable, something which I am still learning as I get to grips with how to really manage a degree whilst pursuing these solopreneur activities. In terms of clients, it’s always best to understand expectations from your service and then let them know your own thoughts, which links into promises. A personal example is my favourite statement: I firmly believe that you can start a small-sized successful side hustle if you invest 30m a day consistently to build it up. However, to sustain it at the level you want it to reach may actually end up taking more than 30m a day. And that is where I needed to revisit my own expectations of this newsletter and journey.

Promises are a hard one. I think it’s always best to err on the side of caution and not overpromise in the first instance, as it may cause friction if you come up short. It’s always better to overdeliver on your expectations and promises, and always looks better for you in terms of building credibility and a reputation. In some cases, it is possible that you are unable to deliver due to unforeseen circumstances, and that’s ok! It happens!

So, if you haven’t already sat down and thought about this for your side hustle, consider what you expect from it, what your potential customers may expect from you and what promises you are willing to make!

See you all next week!

Cheers,

Sanay
