💯 Create Your Own Category

Hope you have all had an excellent start to the week!
I am writing to you all about some of the most commonly asked questions I get:

‘What do I talk about? What is my niche?’

Some context: I usually manage to convince others to start a side hustle or content creation, but they fail to start because they require answers to the questions above.

The truth is no one really knows what to talk about or what their ‘niche’ is when they start off. Quoting Ali Abdaal’s analogy: ‘It’s a case of flinging spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.’

And to be honest, a lot of my content and what I write is still me ‘chucking spaghetti’ and allowing myself creative freedom and then reflecting to see what resonates with all of you.

So, instead of looking at it as finding a ‘niche’, consider creating and focusing on your category of one.

This was originally a term I came across by Jack Raines.

Thinking like you want to create a category of one puts the focus on you and your own unique abilities, viewpoints and skills. And that in itself is a ‘niche’. Whilst obvious, I think many of us tend to forget this and worry about other types of ‘niches’. Ideally, you want to follow your passions and develop your own skills, and this will automatically begin to differentiate you from your competition. Also, it’s easier to become the leader of your own category and be the best in that than it is to try and compare yourself to multiple others.

So for anyone stuck with ‘niches’: focus on your skills and honing them. This shift in mindset has changed how I approach tasks and allowed me not to become distracted by trivial things which may stop me from upskilling.
